Chapter Seventeen

Inside the cell, Zander shifted to his large human form, grabbed clothes that he’d scattered on the floor, and shouldered his way past them.

“Thank you, Tiger-girl,” he said, and started to lead the way out.

Zander obviously remembered the layout from when he’d come to spring Connor, because he unerringly took them through corridors to the small door Tiger had broken open to get them inside. If cameras watched Zander’s escape, no one must be manning the monitors, because they exited the building unchallenged. Tiger-girl noted that the sleeping Lupines never woke either.

Not long later, Zander collapsed in the back seat of the SUV Ronan drove—the Bearmobile, Ronan called it. Tiger-girl was next to Zander, with Connor on his other side, Ben in the passenger seat in front.

Zander had hastily dressed before climbing into the SUV and now he leaned his head on the seat and closed his eyes. “Man, those were some strong tranqs. On top of a ton of punching and a lot of beer.”

“What happened?” Connor asked him.

Zander kept his eyes shut. “Oh, what you would think. I met the Lupines at a bar. We had some brews. Things were going fine, and they told me a lot of shit. Then when I tried to leave, I guess they realized they’d told me too much, or they had decided to lure me into their little clique. Next thing I know, I’m in the parking lot, surrounded by effing Lupines. I fought but there was six of them, and I admit the beer slowed me down a bit. They gave me a good pounding—those Lupines are honed fighters. Then plenty of tranqs. I’m not Tiger. I can’t throw them off like he does.”

Tiger-girl glanced out the back at the pickup behind them that Dylan drove, with her father scrunched into its small front seat. She liked seeing him there, and the comfort that he gave her even from that distance.

“Next thing I know, I wake up in a cell,” Zander continued. “I thought, hmm, glass wall—polar bear—no problem. So, I shifted and tried to bust my way out, but that didn’t work. Obviously. It just hurt.” He opened his eyes and sent Tiger-girl a big smile. “You’re awesome, Tiger-girl.”

“Yeah, she is,” Connor agreed.

Their praise warmed her, but Tiger-girl couldn’t think of how to respond.

Ben peered around the front seat at her. “How’d you figure out the combination? Did you hack it with your mind?”

Tiger-girl shook her head, while Connor let out a laugh. “When I was in the cell with Connor, I watched Sergeant Doughty punch in the code to lock the door,” Tiger-girl said. “I couldn’t see the keypad, but from the way his fingers moved, I figured out the numbers. I guessed they’d only have one combination for all the cells, so they wouldn’t have to remember a bunch of different ones. I tried those numbers, and it worked.” She shrugged. “Easy.”

Ben chuckled and faced front again. “Easy, she says.”

“That’s my girl,” Connor rumbled, and Tiger-girl felt all kinds of heat flow through her.
